The Northern Territory offers numerous opportunities to international students to advance their career. Module 5 will take you through some of the activities available to assist them with their personal and professional development as well as their work rights after graduation.

5.1 Migration

If your students choose to stay in the Northern Territory after graduating, they may need to get a new visa. Some of the visa options that may be available for them include:

5.1.1 Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)

The Temporary Graduate visa has three streams: Post-Vocational Education Work stream, Post-Higher Education Work stream and Second Post-Higher Education Work stream.

• Post-Vocational Education Work stream is for international students who graduate with a vocational education and training qualification. A visa in this stream is generally granted for 18 months.
• Post-Higher Education Work stream is for higher education international students who have recently graduated with a degree from a Northern Territory institution. It lets them live, work and study in Australia, temporarily. A visa in this stream is generally granted between two and three years depending on their qualification.
• Second Post-Higher Education Work stream is for Temporary Graduates holding a Post-Higher Education Work, Post-Study Work or Replacement visa with a degree from an Australian institution located in a regional area. It lets them live, work and study in Australia temporarily. A visa in this stream is generally granted between one and two years.

5.1.2 General Skilled Migration Visa

Northern Territory Government nominates skilled graduates who have occupations in demand, meet standard criteria and demonstrate commitment to live and work in the Northern Territory on a long-term basis.

Graduates who choose the Northern Territory as their first study destination and complete studies in the Northern Territory are given preference for a permanent visa nomination.

5.2 Study NT Student Ambassador Program

Study NT Student Ambassador Program is for international students in the NT and promotes the NT as a study destination, with benefits like workshops and events. Study NT Student Ambassadors are exceptional students who are passionate about studying, living, and working in Australia’s Northern Territory.

As a Study NT Student Ambassador, students:

• receive personal and professional development on topics including public speaking, networking and social media
• connect and network with other students, international delegations, Territory employers and organisations
• showcase your Territory study experience across social media, webinars and in marketing campaigns with Study NT
