Working while studying in the Northern Territory can enrich your students’ overall experience. Module 4 will take you through the work opportunities available to international students in the NT, tips for finding work and their work rights in Australia.

4.1 Work and careers

Australia has a wide range of industries that offer part-time and casual work. Before students undertake any paid work, they must make sure their visa allows them to work.

On an international student visa (Subclass 500), students are allowed to work up to 48 hours a fortnight when their semester/term is in session and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks. They should regularly check their visa conditions to ensure their working hours align with what their visa allows.

Aside from earning extra money, casual work provides an excellent opportunity to be immersed in the Northern Territory culture and community, develop their resume, and make new friends.

4.2 Finding work

Part time and casual work

International students in the Northern Territory can seek part-time or casual employment. This allows them to balance their studies while assisting them with living expenses, meeting new people, and gaining experience in an Australian workplace.

There are many opportunities for students to undertake part time or casual work in industries such as retail, hospitality, tourism, and office administration.
